Pacem in Terris welcomes Dragonetti’s New Academy Quintet, Sunday afternoon, September 5, at 5 p.m.
The DNA Quintet features Pacem‘s co-music director Krista Bennion Feeney and Anca Nicolau, violins, Joanna Hood, viola, Myron Lutzke, cello, and John Feeney, bass. The program will open with three short contrasting works written for string quintet by living American composers: Eugene Minor‘s "Lament for a Moonchild," Gordon Getty’s "Four Traditional Pieces,” and Ellis Schuman’s "In Memoriam for Strings." Antonin Dvorak’s Quintet op. 77 for strings in G Major will close the program.

Description:

Since fold forming was invented, the technique has spread among jewelers and fine metal artisans worldwide. The Center for Metal Arts offers a one-day introduction to fold forming for an enjoyable day in the studio.

Fold forming uses metal’s plasticity and ductility to make complex forms resembling chased, constructed and soldered shapes from single sheets of metal. Radical changes in cross section are possible in as little as 3-5 minutes.

In this workshop, we will work hands-on with the torch, hammer and anvil to learn a series of fold-forming techniques in copper. The results are quick and gratifying, and lead readily to new design ideas in jewelry, mixed media, or just fun objects for the home or garden. This workshop is a great choice for experimenting with new design ideas, for jump starting creativity, or for an enjoyable balance to the work week.

Cost is $80 plus a $15 material fee.
Registration with $45 deposit will hold a seat. This is a small class for personal hands-on time at the forge.

A free talk by Mary Makofske, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010 from 7-8:30 PM
Mary will introduce people to Poe's shrewd amateur detective Chevalier Auguste Dupin in three short stories that the audience is invited to read before the discussion.
Copies of the stories available at the library three weeks in advance.

Mary is a published, award winning poet, fiction writer, and SUNY Orange English professor, now retired. She is a popular speaker at libraries, poetry societies, coffee houses, and cafes n the Hudson Valley.

This program is part of the 2010 Big Read initiative sponsored by the Orange Library Association which encourages area residents to read and share the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
